Make waffles from scratch with 'super simple' recipe – no waffle iron required

Waffles are loved for their thick, fluffy texture and signature square grooves.

While this is what makes them so good at soaking up syrup, honey, yoghurt, and other toppings, it’s impossible to do without a waffle machine.

Luckily this classic brunch treat is easy to cook without one, using a griddle instead.

Sharing the recipe, which has 53 five-star ratings on Tesco Real Food, the Tesco team said: “These easy griddle pan waffles are super simple to make at home for a breakfast or brunch treat any time.”

With minimal ingredients and just 20 minutes of cooking time, these waffles are the ultimate recipe to mark International Waffle Day this March 25.

Waffles recipe

In a large bowl combine the dry ingredients – the flour, baking powder and salt. Next, take a jug and whisk together the eggs, milk and melted butter.

Make a well in the centre of the dry ingredients and whisk in the egg mixture until combined.

Grease a square griddle pan (about 20cm) with butter and place over medium heat. When the butter starts to foam, pour in half the batter to cover the base of the pan.

Cook the waffle for five minutes or until lightly golden. It should be possible to lift the waffle gently with a spatula and see clear griddle lines on the underside.

Carefully flip the waffle over by sliding it onto a large, flat tray or plate, then place the pan over the top and invert it to flip the waffle back into the pan with the cooked side on top.

Allow to cook for a further five minutes on the other side, then transfer to a warmed plate and keep warm while repeating with the remaining batter.

Cut each waffle into four and serve two per person with your choice of toppings. For sweet waffles, try honey, maple syrup, jam or nut butter with fruit and yoghurt.

For savoury, add eggs, crispy bacon and or smoked salmon.
