The First Minister of Wales told ITV’s Good Morning Britain that he was concerned at the speed Boris Johnson’s roadmap outlines opening international travel. Mr Drakeford highlighted the danger of coronavirus variants and referenced the trouble France is having containing new viruses as the nation has just entered another lockdown.
Mr Drakeford said: “My most concerning example is the English roadmap has international travel resuming on May 17, 2021.
“I have long argued that it is over-optimistic and that it does not reflect the risk of reimporting coronavirus from other parts of the world where there are new variants in circulation.
“Reports I heard earlier of events in France just tells us how close to this country some of those risks are currently being experienced.
“So when the Prime Minister speaks next week, I hope that he will say that date is having to be pushed back further into the future in order to go on protecting the UK.”
