Longtime news anchor Jorge Ramos is leaving Univision after 40 years with the Spanish-language TV network.
Ramos has hosted the channel’s flagship news program, “Noticiero Univision,” for the last 38 years. He co-hosted the show with María Elena Salinas until 2017.
The 10-time Emmy-award-winning anchor will also be leaving his post on the network’s public affairs series “Al Punto.”
His departure will come shortly after the upcoming U.S. presidential election, parent company TelevisaUnivision said in a press release.
Neither Ramos nor Univision disclosed a reason for his exit, other than saying it was “mutually agreed not to renew their soon-to-expire contract.”
“This is not a farewell. I will continue anchoring ‘Noticiero Univision’ until December, and afterwards I will share my professional plan,” Ramos, 66, said in a statement. “I am deeply grateful for these four decades at Univision and very proud to be part of a team that has established strong leadership over the years.”
He addressed his decision on Monday’s show, describing it as a “difficult” and “sad” one to make.
“I want to thank those who view us every night, who have accompanied me for so long, with so much affection and loyalty,” Ramos said.
According to Variety, Ramos has signed with Creative Artists Agency to help him figure out the next phase of his career. The agency also represents ABC News host George Stephanopoulos and former NBC News and MSNBC anchor Brian Williams.
In 2015, Ramos was famously kicked out of a Donald Trump press conference after asking the then-presidential hopeful about his immigration policies.
