Lixnaw tragedy – Man believed to have shot wife and son before taking own life at Kerry home


THREE family members have been found dead with gunshot wounds in a suspected murder-suicide at a home tonight.

Gardai have sealed off the scene in Lixnaw, North Co Kerry, this evening.

The body of the woman, who is in her 60s, and her son in his 20s were discovered inside the home when a neighbour called there around 9pm.

The alarm was raised then and gardai who arrived at the scene discovered the body of a man in his 60s believed to be the woman’s partner lying  outside at the rear of the house.

According to sources, the man is believed to have shot his wife and son before taking his own life.

A shotgun was found in close vicinity to his body.


Gardai have sealed off the entire area and the scenes are preserved awaiting the arrival of members of the Garda Technical Burea and the State Pathologist.

Gardai say they are not looking for anyone else in connection with the tragedy.

Door to door enquires will take place and neighbours and friends will be quizzed by officers trying to establish a reason for this most recent of rural tragedies.


An incident room has been set up in Listowel Garda Station and Supt Paul Kennedy is heading up the investigation.

The house is in a very remote area of North Kerry and neighbours are said to be stunned and saddened by the tragedy.

Gardai in Listowel are appealing for anyone with any information to contact them.

A garda spokeswoman said: “Gardai in Listowel are currently at scene of an incident at a domestic residence in North County Kerry, this evening, Tuesday 7th September, 2021.

“Gardaí attended a scene and located the body of a female, 60s, and a male (20s) inside the dwelling. 

“The body of a male, 60s, was discovered outside at the rear of the dwelling. 

“All three bodies have gunshot wounds.  A firearm has been recovered at the scene.

“The State pathologist and the Garda Technical Bureau have been contacted.  The scene is currently preserved and investigations are ongoing.

“An Garda Síochána are not looking for any other person in relation to this incident, at this time.”
