Liverpool beat RB Leipzig 4-0 on aggregate in the Champions League to make it through to the next round of the competition. Jurgen Klopp’s side have put their domestic woes to one side by beating the Bundesliga outfit 2-0 in both legs.
Rio Ferdinand has explained why Liverpool will not win the Champions League this season.
It comes as the Reds made it through to the next round of the competition after beating RB Leipzig 4-0 over two legs.
Liverpool won both matches 2-0 – including at the Puskas Arena as they find form at a home away from home in Hungary.
Klopp’s men have lost six in a row at Anfield but they reversed their fortunes on Wednesday night when Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane got on the scoresheet.
Liverpool’s Premier League title has all but gone with Manchester City running away with the lead.
With a return to form in Europe, fans are hoping the club can quench their thirst for trophies in the Champions League.
But Manchester United legend Ferdinand does not believe they will get close in a conversation with Michael Owen on BT Sport.
Owen said in the studio: “You can rule out certain teams in the Champions League but you can’t rule out Liverpool.
“OK form isn’t there at the moment but it was a stepping stone tonight.
“Just as quickly your form can go it can come back and there’s not many teams you can say are definitely good enough to win. Liverpool are good enough to win.”
But Ferdinand replied: “Not with that defence though. Come on.”
Owen said back: “Rio, there’s still a long time to go. Matip might be back. I agree, this moment in time, Manchester City are a better team than Liverpool.
“But as quickly as it can go wrong it can come back again.”
Ferdinand retorted: “If Van Dijk and Gomez ain’t there they don’t win the Champions League, for me.
“There’s Bayern, Man City, PSG. Those teams will be licking their lips if the come up against a centre-back pairing like that at this level.”
