Liverpool star Virgil van Dijk makes Jurgen Klopp feelings clear after Everton defeat

Virgil van Dijk has made his feelings clear that Jurgen Klopp is, without doubt, the right man to lead Liverpool forward. The Reds are struggling to navigate an ongoing crisis, which sees them five points adrift of the top four.

Klopp was forced to concede that the Premier League champions were unlikely to retain the trophy after the 4-1 humbling against Manchester City two weeks ago.

But things have got even worse ever since following defeats to Leicester and Everton, despite an impressive 2-0 win at RB Leipzig in the Champions League.

The win for the Toffees saw them end a run of 23 visits to Anfield without a victory, dating back to September 1999.

Yet despite Liverpool’s struggles, Van Dijk is under no illusions that Klopp is the right man to manage Liverpool moving forward.

The Dutchman, who was in the stands watching on yesterday evening, has favourited a tweet from The Times’ Henry Winter, in support of Klopp.

It read: “Klopp’s the best thing to happen to #lfc in years. Rebuilt team, rebuilt belief, transformed club behind the scenes, sports science, nutrition etc.

“Won European Cup and the title, playing fabulous football. Klopp’s absolutely the right man to lead them through this current storm.”

The endorsement from Van Dijk would suggest he still has the full backing of the Liverpool dressing room despite their continued slump.

Liverpool fans recently installed a banner outside Anfield in support of their manager, following the sad passing of his mother Elisabeth Klopp.

Yet while he appreciated the gesture, Klopp insisted he does not need additional support as he vowed to turn things around.

“The banner is nice but not necessary. I don’t feel I need special support at the moment,” he said.

“The last thing I want to do is talk about private things in a news conference but, privately, we had a tough time. We always deal with it as a family, 100 percent.”

Liverpool have had a number of high-profile injury problems to contend with this season, particularly at centre-back where Van Dijk has been sorely missed.

He is beginning to step up his rehab following the reconstruction of his ACL, after his injury in the first Merseyside derby earlier this season.

Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher believes the absence of Van Dijk is no longer an excuse for the Reds, who must adapt to the obstacles they have encountered this season.

“Liverpool have been so poor, they have got everything deserved,” Carragher said on Sky Sports following yesterday’s derby defeat.

“They can’t keep saying ‘Virgil van Dijk is out’. I’m sick of saying it myself.

“Going forward is as big a problem as what we’re seeing defensively from Liverpool now. I know Liverpool have dominated possession but it doesn’t mean anything if you don’t create. And that is a big problem for this Liverpool team.

“Very rarely do you see Liverpool play now when you expect them to score.”
