Liverpool left sweating as Real Madrid 'keeping tabs on Trent Alexander-Arnold'

Real Madrid are reportedly monitoring Trent Alexander-Arnold’s contract situation at Liverpool with the defender set to enter his final season at Anfield. Alexander-Arnold’s deal expires in the summer of 2025 and it is claimed that there have not yet been any talks with the England star over an extension.

Alexander-Arnold has been one of the shining lights of the mega-successful Jurgen Klopp reign. The 25-year-old has been one of the Premier League’s chief creators over the last five years despite spending most of his Liverpool career at right-back.

He penned his latest Liverpool contract in 2021, a four-year agreement that has cemented him as one of the club’s key players. But reports suggest that there have been no discussions over extending his stay with his boyhood team.

According to journalist Fabrizio Romano, Spanish giants Real Madrid have been keeping tabs on the supposed lack of progress on a new deal. Liverpool have not indicated any desire to sell the player but Los Blancos might fancy their chances if no negotiations take place between now and the start of next season.

If no extension has been signed prior to January 2025, Alexander-Arnold will be free to discuss a pre-contract agreement with a foreign club. That gives Liverpool nine months in which to persuade the academy graduate into committing his long-term future to the Merseysiders.

Reds icon Jamie Carragher believes Alexander-Arnold’s situation is the club’s top concern. Liverpool find themselves at a crossroads with three important players as not only does Alexander-Arnold’s contract expire at the end of next season, but so do those of Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah.

“Virgil van Dijk is not the biggest worry and neither is Mo Salah. It’s Trent Alexander-Arnold,” Carragher told the Stick To Football Podcast earlier this year. “Those three players have 18 months to go. In 18 months Salah and Van Dijk will be 34 or 35. So this thing about we could lose Van Dijk, well it might actually be the right decision in 18 months.

“Trent Alexander-Arnold is the one you have almost got to build this team around for a new manager. I think Van Dijk and Salah in 12 months’ time, the club will probably look at that and go you have six months to go, how are you feeling as a player.
