Liverpool killing: CPS prosecutor found beaten to death at home – murder probe launched

Officers were called to a property in Vyner Croft, Birkenhead, at about 5.20pm on Sunday, where they found the body of a 69-year-old man. He was subsequently pronounced dead at the scene. The man, who lived alone, was later identified as Martin Decker, and his next-of-kin have since been informed.

The investigation is focusing on “a number of lines of enquiry”, Merseyside Police has said.

CCTV, house-to-house and forensic enquiries are also being carried out in the local area.

Detective Chief Inspector Rachel Wilson said: “This is obviously a very a tragic incident and our thoughts are with Mr Decker’s family and friends.

“The investigation is in the very early stages and we are currently working to establish Mr Decker’s movements on the Saturday and Sunday.

“Vyner Croft is only a small cul-de-sac and I am keen to establish if there was anyone seen in that road or any of the surrounding roads acting suspiciously prior to the discovery of Mr Decker’s body.

“I would ask anyone, including delivery or taxi drivers, who were driving in the area in the past few days to check their dashcam to see if they have captured anything significant.

Mr Decker is believed to have been an experienced CPS solicitor specialising in rape prosecutions.

In 2013, the Liverpool Echo featured him in an article about the launch of the new Unity Team, a new unit that involves rape investigators from Merseyside Police working alongside experts rape lawyers.

At the time, Mr Decker, who was described as leading a team of five prosecutors, said: “The teams here have the expertise and experience to deal with cases of this nature in a sensitive, but effective way.

“We aim to bring more offenders to justice.”
