Liverpool 'in advanced negotations' for Ezequiel Garay as Gini Wijnaldum 'agrees deal'

Liverpool are reportedly in talks over a surprise move for free agent Ezequiel Garay as Jurgen Klopp looks to solve his defensive problems. Meanwhile, Gini Wijnaldum has reportedly agreed a deal with Barcelona, and Sevilla are targeting two of the Premier League side’s attacking stars in the summer transfer window. Express Sport has the latest transfer news from Anfield.

Liverpool ‘in advanced negotations’ for Ezequiel Garay

Liverpool are reportedly in advanced negotiations over a surprise free transfer for Argentine defender Ezequiel Garay.

The 34-year-old has been a free agent since he left Valencia last summer, after four years at the Mestalla.

Garay was once a target for Manchester United, having played under Jose Mourinho at Real Madrid, but the move failed to materialise.

He continued to flourish after joining Benfica before completing a lucrative switch to Russia with Zenit St Petersburg in 2014.

The veteran is now looking for his next challenge and is adamant he still has more to give at the top level after earning 32 caps for his country.

Liverpool were linked with Garay in January when they were in the market for a centre-back, with Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip all sidelined long-term.

They eventually signed Ozan Kabak and Ben Davies on transfer deadline day – but now links have resurfaced with Garay, with El Gol Digital claiming the Reds are in advanced talks over a free transfer this summer.

Fabinho has filled in admirably in defence this season, but now Kabak and Nat Phillips are forming a promising partnership.

Therefore Klopp will have plenty of defensive options once Van Dijk, Gomez and Matip return from injury – so it remains to be seen whether there is any substance to the Garay rumour.

Wijnaldum ‘agrees deal’ with Barcelona

Gini Wijnaldum will reportedly leave Liverpool at the end of the season after agreeing a pre-contract deal to join Barcelona.

That’s the claim from The Sunday Times as the long-running transfer saga appears to near a conclusion.

The midfielder is out of contract this summer so would join the La Liga giants on a free transfer.

He has been linked with Barcelona since Ronald Koeman took charge last summer, but the financial impact of the pandemic is believed to prevented the Catalan side from making a move.

Wijnaldum has been a crucial player for Liverpool as they romped to Champions League and Premier League glory in the past two seasons, and has played every Premier League game this season amid the club’s crippling injury crisis.

Sevilla ‘prepare £21m bid’ for Reds attacking pair

Sevilla are reportedly lining up a double swoop for Liverpool forwards Xherdan Shaqiri and Takumi Minamino.

La Razon claims Jurgen Klopp will have two difficult calls to make in the attacking department as he looks to revamp his squad this summer.

The Spanish newspaper reports that Sevilla would be prepared to pay €15million (£12.9m) for Shaqiri and €10m (£8.5m) for Minamino.

Shaqiri’s current wages could prove a problem for Sevilla, but the deal would be easier to facilitate if they lost Youssef En-Nesyri, who is a target for Borussia Dortmund.

Minamino’s Anfield future remains unclear with the Japanese international currently enjoying life on loan at Southampton – who may also be interested in a permanent deal.
