From hobs to kitchen surfaces, grease is a common occurrence that can be difficult to clean. However, experts from Plumbworld say they have a “versatile, natural, and budget-friendly solution for preventing grease build-up in your kitchen”. The solution might already be tucked away in your kitchen cupboard.
A bathroom and kitchen expert from Plumbworld said baking soda, also known as bicarbonate of soda, is “a natural, cost-effective solution to prevent grease build-up in your kitchen”.
Express.co.uk has independently searched some popular supermarkets and found that you can buy 200g of baking soda from Tesco for 65p, 180g from Sainsbury’s for 59p and 200g from Aldi for 59p.
“Baking soda, also known as sodium bicarbonate, is a common household item widely available in supermarkets and grocery stores,” said Plumbworld.
“Baking soda is a mild alkaline compound that effectively cuts through grease and grime. Its gentle abrasive properties help to physically remove dirt without scratching surfaces.
“When mixed with water, baking soda forms a paste that can lift grease and other residues from surfaces, making them easier to wipe away.”
They explained that the best way to tackle greasy surfaces is by making a baking soda paste. Take two tablespoons of baking soda, measuring approximately 30g.
Gradually add water to the baking soda while stirring until you achieve a thick, spreadable consistency. The paste should be thick enough to stick to surfaces without dripping.
“For tougher grease, you can add a few drops of washing-up liquid or a small amount of white vinegar to the paste,” said the experts. “This will enhance the grease-cutting power of the baking soda, though it’s effective on its own.”
Once your paste is ready, identify the areas in your kitchen that are prone to grease build-up. “After applying the paste, allow it to sit on the surface for 10 to 15 minutes,” said Plumbworld.
“During this time, the baking soda will start to break down the grease. The slightly abrasive texture of the baking soda also helps to lift grime, making it easier to remove.”
After the paste has had time to work, use a damp sponge or cloth to gently scrub the area. Plumbworld explained: “The baking soda’s mild abrasiveness will help to remove even stubborn grease without damaging surfaces. If the grease is particularly stubborn, you can use a soft-bristled brush to scrub the area more thoroughly.
“Once you’ve scrubbed the surface, wipe away the baking soda paste with a clean, damp cloth. You may need to rinse the cloth and wipe the area a few times to ensure all the paste is removed, leaving the surface clean and grease-free.”
