Katy Perry’s own mom duped by AI-generated Met Gala pics

Katy Perry and Rihanna did not attend the 2024 Met Gala on Monday night, but many fans were duped into believing they did — thanks to the magic of artificial intelligence.

Even Perry’s own mother was conned into believing she showed up in grand style to the star-studded fete at the Metropolitan Museum of Modern Art after deepfake photos of the A-listers circulated on social media.

The “American Idol” judge took to Instagram to share two very believable yet fake images, writing, “Couldn’t make it to the MET, had to work.”

One of the AI-created photos of the singer in a floral gown has been viewed more than 16 million times on X, as of Tuesday evening.

“Katy Perry. That’s it,” praised the user who posted the image.

Perry even shared a screenshot of a text exchange with her mother, who was also hoodwinked into believing the photo was real.

“Didn’t know you went to the Met,” her mom wrote. “What a gorgeous gown, you look like the Rose Parade, you are your own float lol.”

“lol mom the AI got you too, BEWARE!” Perry said in response.

There was also a widely circulated digitally-made photo of Rihanna, to which X added the following disclaimer: “This is an AI/digitally altered image of Rihanna. She did not arrive to the 2024 Met Gala wearing this dress.”

Reps reportedly attributed Rihanna’s absence from the Met Gala, at which she’s a frequent attendee, to being sick with the flu.

Perry has openly denounced the use of artificial intelligence. She joined more than 200 artists — including Nicki Minaj, Billie Eilish and the estate of Frank Sinatra — last month in signing an open letter that urged tech and digital music platforms against using AI to “infringe upon and devalue the rights of human artists.”
