In March 2020, Derek Draper was rushed to hospital with COVID-19 symptoms and was put into a coma as he battled the virus. After almost a year in hospital, Kate Garraway’s husband returned home with the Good Morning Britain host updating viewers on his progress. With news the coronavirus pandemic is now an endemic, Kate was thrilled to hear there is light at the end of the tunnel.
Speaking on Good Morning Britain, she said: “This is extraordinary news.”
But Dr Amir Khan warned her: “It’s not over yet.”
“It’s the news we’ve been waiting for, surely?” Kate replied.
“They’re saying Britain has moved from a pandemic to an endemic, its going to make people think, ‘Oh thank God is this VE day, is it all over?’”

Dr Amir added: “Hopefully we are turning the tide on this.
“We still need to take caution, we’ve seen in India what happens when you lift restrictions too quickly or you don’t have any restrictions at all.
“The vaccine is really good in bringing down the virus, but I wouldn’t say we’re yet out of (a pandemic) yet.”
It came after Dr Amir spoke about the latest update on the coronavirus pandemic: “It’s a very bold statement from a day called Professor Sarah Walker, who’s the Chief Investigator of this study which has been in all the papers.
On Thursday’s edition of Good Morning Britain, Kate explained she “doesn’t want to tempt fate” as Derek continues to recover.
She told co-hosts Susanna Reid and Adil Ray: “It’s a whirligig. It’s been wonderful having Derek at home and lots of little positives, I think.
“And whether those are positives because it is genuinely helping his cognition being at home or whether I’m there to see the little things whereas I couldn’t go in before and we were on FaceTime and stuff, I don’t know.
“But it feels positive. So little moments of reaction and he actually said something the other day.”
Kate revealed Derek had even complimented her on a new dress: “I walked in the other day to say I was off to work and he said, ‘New dress?’ which was just amazing. And it was [a new dress].
“I thought that was amazing on so many levels because he recognised it. Second, he remembered and realised I need a lot of flattery.”
But despite the positive steps Derek is making, Kate doesn’t want to “tempt fate”.
Good Morning Britain airs weekdays on ITV at 6am.
