Kate Garraway fears she may have to quit GMB job to care for husband 'Different dynamic'

Kate Garraway, 53, has admitted she “fears the reality” of having to quit her job on Good Morning Britain if her husband Derek Draper needs 24-hour care due to his health battle. Derek remains in intensive care after being rushed to hospital with coronavirus in March last year, which led to him being placed in a coma.

The presenter revealed she is aware that she and her other half could have a “completely different dynamic” in their marriage when it is possible for him to leave hospital.

Kate has renovated the ground floor of the home she shares with Derek and their two children, Darcey, 15, and Billy, 11, in order for it to be wheelchair accessible ahead of his possible return.

While letting cameras into her house to film the renovations for her ITV documentary Finding Derek, Kate can be heard discussing the future with her son.

She tells Billy: “You know that we are hoping that dad will get better and better, but when he comes home he will probably need to be in a wheelchair, so we are trying to make it so he can do all this.”

It will also show the mum-of-two speaking to people who are suffering from long Covid, alongside NHS staff and other experts.

One emotional moment in the programme sees Kate recall being told by Derek’s doctors that he was the most seriously ill patient they had seen who remained alive.

“Derek is the sickest person the team of doctors in the lung hospital have treated that has lived,” she said.

“His kidneys have failed, his liver has failed, his heart is being supported with medicine.

“So the best way of coping with that is to think, ‘What have I got control over?’ and I guess that is making sure the children feel okay.”

Derek has become the UK’s longest surviving COVID-19 patient.

The illness has affected the former lobbyist’s kidneys, damaged his liver and pancreas, and caused his heart to stop on more than one occasion.

Derek also caught pneumonia with numerous other infections leaving holes in his lungs.

The virus has also caused him to lose eight stone in weight whilst spending months in intensive care.

Kate Garraway Finding Derek airs tonight at 9pm on ITV.
