Johnny played the role of Mike Baldwin for 30 years, becoming a huge favourite across UK households for his portrayal of the lovable rogue. His family has released a statement on today’s sad news.
In the statement his family said: “It is with great sadness that we announce the death of our father, Johnny Briggs.
“He passed away peacefully this morning after a long illness, with family by his side. He was 85.
“We politely ask for privacy at this time, so that we can quietly grieve as a family and remember the wonderful times we had with him. Thank you.”
Tributes have flooded in for the acting legend who also appeared on the hit ITV soap from 1976 to 2006.
He returned to Coronation Street for the final time in 2012.
Johnny also appeared in Carry On films, Crossroads and The Saint among many other shows.
But he remains best known for the role of Mike Baldwin, whose final scene saw him die in the arms of love rival Ken Barlow in one of the most memorable moments in the soap’s history.

Johnny left Coronation Street because of the hectic filming schedule. By the time he quit the show he had been suffering with Alzheimer’s disease for several months.
Johnny’s family said he died following a long illness.
