‘I think the referee has had an awful game… he’s given everything to Lyon’: Joe Cole and Carlton Cole lead West Ham fans’ fury at official Felix Zwayer after Aaron Cresswell’s red card – and Moussa Dembele’s WINK at the camera after winning the foul

  • Former West Ham duo Joe Cole and Carlton Cole fury at official’s poor display
  • German referee Felix Zwayer sent Aaron Cresswell off at the stroke of half-time
  • The Hammers full-back tugged Lyon striker Moussa Dembele back to see red

Former West Ham winger Joe Cole insists official Felix Zwayer has had an awful game, even before sending off Aaron Cresswell on the stroke of half-time.

The full-back was handed his marching orders inside the two additional minutes after tugging Dembele back when he tried to break into the box in the first-half of the Europa League quarter-final at the London Stadium.

The 25-year-old Dembele winked at the camera when it zoomed in after the Hammers were reduced to 10-men as they went into the half-time break goalless.

Hammers boss David Moyes even waited for the referee to voice his anger at the decision, and has been shown a yellow card.

‘It’s an obvious chance if he touches it across Cresser, but he knows if he touches the goal it gives Cresswell the chance to get the block in,’ Joe Cole told BT Sport.

‘He feels the contact. I think the referee has had an awful game. We talk about experience in Europe, Lyon were going down, they slowed the game down on multiple occasions.

‘Players going down with cramp after 20-30 minutes. An experienced referee should have realised that.

‘You expect those borderline decisions to go to the home team, but he has given everything to them.’

Carlton Cole was furious with the red card, adding: ‘That is not enough contact to go down in that fashion, if i was to go down in that fashion, they would call me a diver.

‘When you look at his face, he winks when the camera goes onto him. He’s getting the opportunity to do that and he’s going to take it.’

Former Chelsea winger Joe Cole feels Cresswell unfortunately gave the referee a decision to make although the position of the ball should have been taken into consideration.

‘It’s an awkward position because as Cresswell goes across him, there is a hand on his chest.

‘Dembele buys the free-kick, but then you have to think about the laws of the game. Is it a clear and obvious chance, he’s going away from goal.

‘Cresswell has give the referee a chance to give the red card. Dembele’s touch is taking him away from goal. He could stay on his feet, he buys it.

‘When you’re going through on goal and you feel a touch, he feels it is better for him to go down and get Cresswell sent off in that split second.

‘He probably thinks i might even be in the box as well.’

The West Ham faithful were also in disbelief at the sending off and took to social media to express their anger.

One fan tweeted: ‘What a joke!!! Never a red!! Lyon are embarrassing themselves!!

Another fan insisted: ‘The referee has been utter garbage he has fallen for Lyon’s play acting, stopping the game for nothing and that was never a red card for Cresswell.

A third added: ‘I just don’t understand how that’s been given as a red. Dembele’s for that wink alone deserves to be chased out of the bowl.

A fourth simply said: ‘Blatantly went over when minimal touch. And then dirty wink knowing he has conned the referee. While wearing captain’s armband with – RESPECT on it. What a joke!!! Disgusting example to set.’
