Kethevane Gorjestani told France24 that EU states such as Poland and Hungary were not unhappy under Donald Trump’s administration and will not be as welcoming to Joe Biden as previously expected. The US commentator also highlighted US sanctions over the Nord Stream pipeline as a policy that will cause friction with Germany.

Ms Gorjestani said: “There are some allies such as Poland, Hungary and Turkey who were not too unhappy with the previous administration and will maybe not be as welcoming to the new one as expected.

“Then there are the US sanctions over the Nord Stream pipeline that are bound to create some tensions with some allies, especially Germany.

“Finally, NATO allies will be waiting impatiently for some clarity over US plans to withdraw troops from Afganistan.

“The deal and deadline negotiated by Donald Trump is coming up on May 1, 2021.”

Last month, President Biden snubbed Boris Johnson and the UK as he stressed the importance of ties between the United States and Europe.

He issued a triumphant rallying call during the Munich Security Conference but failed to mention the UK.

The US President hailed the partnership between the United States and Europe as the “cornerstone” of his plans.

President Biden said: “America is back and I speak to you today as President of the United States and I am sending a very clear message to the world, America is back.

He said: “I know the past few years have strained and tested our transatlantic relationship but the United States is determined to reengage with Europe, to consult with you and earn back our position of trust and leadership.”

Joe Biden defeated Donald Trump in the 2020 US Presidential election.

Biden was inaugurated as US President in January 2021.

He is the oldest US President in history at 78 and will be 82 at the end of his first term.
