The First Lady was making a rare solo appearance on The Kelly Clarkson Show, when she opened up regarding the separation from her first husband, Bill Stevenson in 1975. In a candid discussion with host Kelly Clarkson, herself a recent divorcee, Dr Biden explained how the decision had led to her meeting the future President, Joe Biden. The Bidens have been together for nearly 44 years and Dr Biden was happy to share some relationship wisdom.

Dr Biden told Clarkson that she would not have had her “beautiful family” if not for her divorce.

She said: “I look back on it now and I think, you know, if I hadn’t gotten divorced, I never would have met Joe. I wouldn’t have the beautiful family I have now,” the educator said. “So I really think things happen for the best.

The First Lady also offered some motherly guidance to Clarkson, who recently filed for divorce from her husband of nearly seven years, Brandon Blackstock.

This is what I would say to you if I were your mother. My mother always said to me, ‘Things are going to look better tomorrow,’ and if you can take one day at a time, and things will get better,” Biden told the three-time Grammy-winning singer.

Dr Biden was still married to her former partner Bill Stevenson when she met Mr Biden in March 1975, having separated from him the year before.

The couple were going through a messy divorce, which was finalised in May that year.

Speaking to Vogue in 2014, Dr Biden confirmed the “Biden family legend” that her husband has proposed to her five times.

When asked for the fourth time, she added: “I said, ‘Not yet. Not yet. Not yet.’

“Because by that time, of course, I had fallen in love with the boys, and I really felt that this marriage had to work.

“Because they had lost their mum, and I couldn’t have them lose another mother.

He was also a widower, having lost his wife and daughter in a tragic car crash.

The future President was also the father of two young boys, Beau and Hunter, who had survived the crash.

The couple were married by a Catholic priest on June 17, 1977 in New York City.

Dr Biden raised Beau and Hunter, who called her ‘Mum’, but she did not legally adopt them.
