Interior tips: Create a more ambient room by updating your lighting fixtures – expert tips

Creating the perfect room can take a lot of time and effort but can really reflect your own individual style. Lighting can really reflect your personality and mood while giving your house a stylish edge. Now, President at Lumilum Michael Meiser has shared his top tips for upgrading and improving your home’s lighting.

Set the ambience

Lighting is key to creating the right ambience in a room.

A bright fluorescent tube light may be practical but there are more stylish alternatives.

Mr Meiser said to look at lighting that creates a “warm glow” to add a more “intimate feel” to your room.

For a kitchen or bathroom, the lighting expert recommended under-cabinet LEDs to create a “calming atmosphere” that is comfortable on the eyes.

Some rooms have naturally dark corners where accent lights would look more stylish than pendant lights.

Mr Meiser added: “The general rule is that the focal point of your accent light should be roughly three times brighter than the rest of the room – helping to show off those prized ornaments or give the room an ambient glow.”

Lighting for a purpose

The lighting expert said it’s important to have separate lights around rooms for different purposes.

Mr Meiser said “task lights” will help to boost your mood, productivity and focus and can help aid bedtime reading.

He added: “For example, bedside or desk lights can take away the glare from screens and using side lights alongside mirrors makes getting ready easier and shows you’ve got an eye for detail.

“Therapy lighting also adds a soothing aura to rooms.

“Increasingly popular with those working from home, lighting the room with warm colours or soothing cold hues – through light boxes or salt lamps – is known to help fend off Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), while adding comforting accents to a room.”

Living more sustainably by making eco-friendly choices is super important, even when improving your home.

Mr Meiser recommended “avoiding” traditional incandescent light bulbs because they are less energy efficient.

However, using LED strips or fluorescent lightbulbs uses significantly less energy.

He explained further: “Plus, in addition to playing your part in protecting the planet, you could save a lot of money by switching from halogen bulbs to LEDs.

“It’s estimated that the average homeowner spends 15 percent of their energy cost lighting their home.

“Making the switch could cut this cost by 70 percent – helping to keep your wallet looking as good as your home.”
