Inside royal homes: The TWO most memorable times royal houses looked relatively normal

Compared to castles and palaces, it’s hard to imagine how the homes of the Royal Family could ever resemble your own. But it seems that simple pleasures and uncomplicated decor are favoured by a few royals. With the likes of Prince William, Prince Harry and their cousins Princess Eugenie and Princess Beatrice having flown the nest, royal properties are spreading far and wide across the UK – and these are the times they’ve looked just like your average home.

The pandemic has given the public exclusive insight into the reality of royal living.

Zoom calls replaced royal visits during the lockdown, with many of the Royal Family members taking to social media to share a glimpse of their work from home reality with the public.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge shared many videos of their WFH life, though they were careful not to reveal too much of their home.

Here are the two most memorable times royals shared a glimpse of their homes with the public.

Princess Anne

Perhaps the most insightful image of them all is the candid snapshot of an evening at home with Princess Anne.

The Queen’s only daughter has been pictured in her humble living room with her husband Sir Timothy Laurence, surrounded by very ordinary household items.

By looking at the image, you wouldn’t know that the Princess and her husband are in fact sitting in just one small part of their 730-acre Gloucestershire estate.

The Gatcombe Park residence is said to feature five main bedrooms, four secondary bedrooms and reception rooms, as well as a library, a billiard room and a conservatory.

Pictured in what appears to be one of the reception rooms, Anne and her husband are focused on the Scotland football game shown on their modestly-sized television.

The image was posted on the Royal Family Twitter account with a caption that read: “HRH and Vice Admiral Sir Tim cheered Scotland on from home today as they played England for the Calcutta Cup, 150 years since their first match.”

A rather cosy affair, the Princess and her husband were not afraid to share what appears to be a slightly cluttered room – with florals and deep oak wood furniture offering a classic contrast.

The stacks of books and papers are accompanied by statues and photo frames dotted around the room, with a dog bed tucked in the corner.

Posting regular videos and images on the site, Fergie is perhaps one of the most engaging royals when it comes to sharing her home on social media.

Sarah Ferguson resides at Royal Lodge in Windsor with her ex-husband, Prince Andrew.

The pair choose to live separate lives on the 98-acre estate which is just three miles south of the Queen’s Easter residence, Windsor Castle.

Fergie’s personal kitchen was shown off when her assistant Antonia Marshall shared an entertaining image of the Duchess of York in her surprisingly normal kitchen back in April last year on her instagram page @antoniamarshall.

The oddly relatable room boasts wooden flooring and cupboards with simple cream walls and black marble worktops.

Featured again in a post showing ‘Sarah’s Trust’ cupcakes made by the Duchess herself, Fergie’s kitchen showed modest spotlights which shone on a busy worktop with a small TV, bowl of lemons and some pale pink roses.

While the decor is somewhat mis-matched to the grandeur of the Royal Lodge, it appears that the informal tone runs right through Fergie’s living space in Windsor.

In many of her other posts she can be seen in a homely dining room filming weekly videos titled – ‘storytime with friends’ where she reads books to her younger audience.
