Illinois man charged with killing 2 brothers, setting mother’s house on fire

An Illinois man has been arrested for allegedly killing his two brothers and setting their late mother’s home on fire, authorities said Friday.

Jeffrey S. Austwick, 54, of Highland Park, is accused of fatally shooting 60-year-old John Austwick and 63-year-old Marc Austwick earlier this week.

On Wednesday, Highland Park’s police and fire departments responded to a fire at a residence roughly 25 miles north of Chicago, where they located two male victims with “suspicious injuries.”

The two men, later identified as the older Austwick brothers, were pronounced dead at the scene.

After an investigation carried out by Highland Park police and the Lake County Major Crime Task Force, authorities determined the victims’ younger brother was responsible for the double shooting.

Investigators said John and Marc Austwick were at the Highland Park home to discuss the property with their brother. The house was owned by their mother, who had died just five days earlier, and appeared to be listed for sale, local media reported.

“The investigation shows after they arrived, Jeffrey shot Marc and John, then set the home on fire,” Chris Covelli, a spokesperson for Lake County Major Crimes Task Force, told the Daily News in an email.

The suspect fled the area in his vehicle.

Later on Wednesday, investigators obtained a nationwide warrant for his arrest on two counts of murder. He was arrested early Friday morning at a park in St. Louis, Mo.

He remains in custody in Missouri pending an initial court hearing, Covelli said.
