Hundreds of pro-Palestine protestors gathered across the street from a fundraiser for Vice President Kamala Harris in Harlem on Wednesday, waving Palestinian flags and carrying signs.
The approximate 300 demonstrators were barricaded on West 135th Street and Broadway, with some of their placards declaring “Kamala=Genocide” and “Silent on Genocide” while chanting “Genocide is not a single issue, genocide is every issue.” There was no indication the surging presumptive Democratic presidential candidate attended the fundraiser.
“We’re protesting Kamala Harris,” Manhattan lawyer J.J. Abbas, 34 said. “The U.S. gave another 20 billion dollars out of our taxpayer’s dollars to kill Palestinians. The entire Biden administration is complicit in the annihilation of Palestinians in Gaza.”
New York Assembly District Leader Corey Ortega called the event “an old-school rally, not even (Donald) Trump had this kind of showing.”
“America is great, we all have the freedom to express our opinions,” he said in response to the demonstration.
Police said there were protesters taken into custody following the event, but no official numbers were released.
“What is happening to the Palestinians is what was done to the Jews in World War II. Israel is doing to the Palestinians what the Nazis did to us,” said Holocaust survivor Jeanie Dubnau, 86.
