Streaming service Hulu has tapped former Disney and Younger star Hilary Duff to take the lead in a sequel series to CBS’s popular sitcom, How I Met Your Mother. The long awaited comedy spin-off is finally in early stages of production after several attempts to get off the ground, but even diehard fans of the original series are less than thrilled by the announcement.
Comedy aficionados are divided after sequel series How I Met Your Father was given the go-ahead by streaming service Hulu.
The online streaming platform has given the new sitcom spin-off a straight-to-series order of ten episodes.
Hilary Duff has been confirmed to star in the series, replacing actress and filmmaker Greta Gerwig, who was initially announced to be playing Sally when the sequel was first proposed in 2014.
The news has been met with mixed reactions from viewers of the original series, which wrapped up its ninth season in 2014 with one of the most widely panned sitcom finales of all time.

Strong reactions on both sides of the fence poured in on Twitter following the announcement.
One disgruntled user said: “Ugh… How I met your father? REALLY? … REALLY?! Ugh…”
However, another more impartial fan wrote: “It will be really good or it will be really bad, there is no in between.”
Among a number of bizarre choices made to the final season, fans were outraged when the titular mother, Tracy McConnell (Cristin Milioti) passed away in the final episode.
Isaac Aptaker and Elizabeth Berger have been confirmed to lead the new series, following their stints as showrunners for This Is Us and Love, Victor.
Original series creators Carter Bays and Craig Thomas will also be on board, though just as executive producers.
In a joint statement, Bays and Thomas said: “We are honored by their passion and vision, and look forward to helping them tell a legendary new story. (Thanks to all the HIMYM fans out there who waited for it.)”
Aptaker and Berger added: “We are beyond excited to be bringing How I Met Your Father to Hulu.”
“Carter and Craig’s iconic original series revolutionized the half-hour comedy, and we are so honored to be carrying the torch forward for the next generation — and with Hilary Duff no less!”
They then confirmed that the new lead will be portraying a character named Sophie, though no additional cast members have yet to be announced.
With new head writers leading the way, even the most cynical fans may be willing to give this new take on the classic sitcom another try.
How I Met Your Mother is available to stream on Netflix.
