Chelsea have seen Antonio Rudiger flourish ever since Tuchel’s appointment, with the Germany international previously marginalised by Frank Lampard.
And Cesar Azpilicueta has also looked comfortable playing in a back three.
But Chelsea want another centre-back regardless and links to Niklas Sule have been strong of late.
The Bayern Munich defender may leave the Allianz Stadium, with Dayot Upamecano poised to join from RB Leipzig at the end of the campaign.
And, if he moves to Chelsea, he could become the bedrock of their defence.
Likewise David Alaba. Though he’s played at centre-back he could represent a better option than Ben Chilwell instead. Although, admittedly, it requires a formational tweak…
