House hunters camp outside estate agents overnight to be first on list for new estate

The group of hopefuls were aiming to snap up one of the 14 properties being released the following morning, though with roughly 30 people waiting, demand was greater than supply. Those waiting brought camping gear and blankets to spend their Thursday night waiting for Bidmead Cook Estate Agents in Aberdare, Wales to open the following morning.

The potential homes in question are part of a site called Cwm Heulwen, with the prices ranging from around £180,000 for three-bedroom properties and £320,000 for four-bed houses.

Within two hours of the estate agent opening its doors, the final property on the plot had been sold.

Gavin Williams, director at the estate agents, said: “We didn’t expect this, we knew there would be plenty of interest but we didn’t think people would wait through the night.

“They were all in good spirits, they have all met their future neighbours now.”

Mr Williams visited the potential buyers as they waited and even took them doughnuts and coffee to see them through the long evening ahead.

The homes, which are currently under construction, are being built on the former spot of Blaengwawr School by property developer Davis Homes.

They are located just 15 minutes from the Aberdare town centre by foot – one of the main reasons for their popularity.

Mr Williams has 20 years of experience working in the area and said that every estate agent he knows across Wales is facing a similar level of demand.

He explained that it is the standard of the developers, location and good gardens on offer that is motivating people to wait overnight for a chance to get one of the properties.

The estate agent said that they were all local buyers, adding: “It’s brilliant for the local economy.”

Those still looking to get one of the highly sought after properties are in luck, as there will be 120 on the site altogether and more are likely to be released soon.

The first of the new homes is expected to be ready by the summer.
