HMRC scam: Warning as Britons attacked with relentless scam calls – ‘really worried!'

0

HMRC helps millions of people with their tax affairs each year, and thus will be a familiar name to Britons. However, scammers have unfortunately been exploiting this to attack unsuspecting members of the public. While scam calls have circulated over the past few weeks, it appears the cybercriminals are coming up with new ways to target Britons.

The HM Courts and Tribunals Service has been forced to release a statement today via its social media channels to warn people about the scam.

It said: “Scammers are making fraudulent calls claiming to be HMRC.

“Calls may mimic a phone number from Royal Courts of Justice.

“Do not provide any details or make a payment.”

Several people shared their experiences, thoughts and concerns about the scam, while urging others to stay alert.

One wrote: “I am getting phone calls every day which I think are fake calls claiming there’s fraudulent activity on my tax number from HMRC.”

Another said: “Just has the HMRC tax fraud case against me, press 1 or else, scam call again.

“If you get a call, hear an automated voice saying press 1 or there will be consequences – hang up, and block the number.”

A third individual was left worried, telling HMRC: “Again getting calls from you asking me to select option one – can you confirm you are not actually calling?”

Another person shared their experience, saying “I’ve had four spam calls on HMRC and internet scams this week. If you’re not helping then you’re part of the problem, and there will be people being seriously affected by this.”

An individual who was inundated with calls said: “More scam calls claiming to be HMRC or the tax office. if they are true I’m about to be arrested twice in one day!”

And a final person expressed their worries about who could be duped, stating: “Just had a phone call telling me I’m being investigated by HMRC for serious tax fraud.

“I know it’s a scam and I’ll ignore it, but I can fully understand why some people would be really worried by a call like this.”
