Hartford 7th grader in custody after bringing gun to school

A Hartford, Conn. seventh grader is in custody after bringing a gun to school on Wednesday morning, police said.

The incident occurred at Achievement First Summit Middle School with police recovering the gun, which school security found in the student’s backpack, around 10:45 a.m.

The school was placed on lockdown while the police responded. The lockdown was lifted after the student was taken into custody, a spokesperson for the Hartford Police Department, said.

“It was found that a student had a firearm in their possession. We immediately initiated a lockdown and contacted the police,” the school said in a statement. “The police confiscated the gun and removed it from campus, and the student is in custody.”

The school confirmed that all students were safe.

Classes were eventually dismissed for the day, according to WFSB.
