Grey's Anatomy season 18: Addison Montgomery 'to return' as star hints at comeback

Grey’s Anatomy has become famous for killing off major characters when Derek Shepherd (played by Patrick Dempsey) died after 11 seasons on the show. However, more recently, the series has become equally well-known for bringing people back from the dead, as Derek made a surprise return to screens in the season 17 premiere episode back in November.

Could the show pull a similar twist with Derek’s first wife Addison Montgomery (Kate Walsh)?

The actress recently spoke out about a possible return of her character and Derek’s comeback.

“I was thrilled to see how they brought Dempsey back,” she said.

“It’s so cool, it’s so iconic,” added Walsh.

She also commented on the possibility of reprising her role as Addison in the medical drama saying: “I would love to.”

“It just would be a matter of how to do it and when,” added Walsh.

Speaking on the TODAY programme on Thursday, she admitted: “There was talk at one point in time, but it was conflicting with another shooting schedule I had for (Netflix’s) Umbrella Academy.

“I would love to if it was able to happen. I’d be totally into it,” she said.

Derek’s return to the series shocked fans to their core, as the character died on screen in 2015.

At the end of the episode entitled The Center Won’t Hold, Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo) was admitted to hospital after she collapsed.

While unconscious, she sees a vision of herself on a beach where she sees Derek.

After sending fans into a frenzy with this cliffhanger, in the following episode, My Happy Ending, viewers saw Derek again in a dream sequence.

The two had an emotional reunion while Meredith is lying in a hospital bed deteriorating after a COVID-19 diagnosis.

Dempsey spoke about how the cameo came to be and the fans’ response to his return on The Ellen Show: “No one knew until I showed up on set that day.”

“And then we were really concerned that someone would take a picture and it would get out somehow, but we managed to keep it a secret, which was pretty phenomenal.

“The impact, the response has been incredibly overwhelming and very moving,” said the actor.

Grey’s Anatomy airs on ABC.
