Greece sends 'severe' weather warning as holidays will be ruined – new map

Some of the most popular holiday destinations in Greece are expected to be hit with extreme weather in the coming days.

The Ionian Islands, western Peloponnese and larger areas of western Greece are expected to be affected by storms that should begin on Monday night (September 9) through to Wednesday afternoon (September 11).

Popular tourist destinations such as Corfu and Kefalonia are expected to be affected. It is predicted there will be intense rainfall, thunderstorms, hail and strong gusty winds which poses risk of flooding in many areas.

The weather system is coming in from the west and should be hitting the Eastern Greek islands as early as Monday afternoon, before moving to the north and the west of the country.

However by the early hours of Wednesday morning conditions look to be improving across the country.

In response to the extreme conditions the Greek national weather service (EMY) has issued an emergency bulletin to keep residents and tourists informed.

Website Meteoalarm also provides continued updates on the weather systems forming and the weather warnings that have been issued.

The reports have left some holiday makers scrambling, with many who flocked to Greece for some late summer sun disappointed at the inclement conditions.

However Greek authorities have not taken extreme measures of canceling flights or ordering people to stay inside, merely issuing a statement saying that “Residents in the affected regions are advised to stay informed about the latest weather developments and take necessary precautions.”

The latest news on extreme weather across Europe follows the earliest heatwaves on record earlier in the summer in Greece which caused wildfires near the northern city of Thessaloniki.

And earlier in August when tourists spotted waterspouts, caused by extreme conditions, in Zakynthos in the Ionian Sea.
