Golf betting tips and free bets: Three team picks for the Zurich Classic including in-form 66/1 duo

ALL sorts of hard luck stories at The Heritage last week, where 22-1 tip Shane Lowry seemed to be cruising to victory before chipping into the water at the short 13th, and running up a double bogey.

Lowry ended up missing out on a spot in the play-off by one shot, the same fate as 100-1 shot Sepp Straka.

Billy Horschel is among the favourites with Sam Burns this week

Straka held a share of the lead standing on the 18th tee, only to bogey the final hole and drop into a share of third, alongside Lowry.

Both men rewarded each way backers, but it could have been so much better.

This week’s Zurich Classic – with eighty two-man teams alternating between fourball and foursomes – is a very different proposition, and the bookies are finding it hard to decide on their favourites.

The exciting young combination of Collin Morikawa and Viktor Hovland share top spot with Patrick Cantlay and Xander Schauffele, with defending champions Cameron Smith and Marc Leishman – who did us a favour last year – next best.

If Cantlay and Schauffele can reproduce the form that brought them two empathic foursomes victories at the Ryder Cup, they will be the team to beat – especially as Hovland’s erratic short game could be exposed in this format, as it was at Whistling Straits.

But Cantlay and Schauffele failed to crack the top ten here last year, and there may be better value further down the list, especially with several bookies paying seven places….

Hot shots: Billy Horschel and Sam Burns, 12-1.

This duo teamed up for a share of fourth place last year, and both have enjoyed plenty of success in individual events since then.

Horschel was fresh off his World Match Play triumph a year ago, and went on to win the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth, while Burns used the Zurich as a springboard to a first PGA Tour victory in the Valspar Championship a week later.

Burns has registered two more victories since, while Horschel finished runner-up at Bay Hill a couple of months ago. So there is every reason to think they will form an even more potent partnership this time.

Mid price: Talor Gooch and Max Homa, 25-1.

Another duo who will be renewing their partnership from last year, and two more players whose individual careers have headed in the right direction over the past 12 months.

They have both won on the PGA Tour in the last year, and have taken up residence in the top forty of the world rankings.

They finished in a tie for 17th last year – just a shot behind Cantlay and Schauffele – and were surprisingly let down by a shortage of birdies in the fourballs, after shooting a respectable three under in foursomes. Unlikely to make the same mistake again.

Long shots: Charl Schwarzel and Christiaan Bezuidenhout, 66-1.

Schwarzel arrived here last year looking like a man who could barely hit the planet. But he teamed up brilliantly with Louis Oosthuizen, and the South African duo eventually lost out in a play-off against Smith and Leishman.

Schwarzel quickly clocked a couple more top three finishes on the PGA Tour, and the former Master champion provided further evidence he still has plenty of game with a top ten at Augusta a couple of weeks ago.

Bezuidenhout finished just outside the top 40 at Augusta.  The three-time European Tour winner’s form has been steady rather than striking in his debut season in  the States, but his experienced partner could easily bring out the best in him.
