Gloucester sign Albert Tuisue from Premiership rivals London Irish with the Fijian No 8 joining George Skivington’s side at the start of next season after an offer which was ‘too good to turn down’

  • Albert Tuisue will join Gloucester for the start of the 2022-23 campaign
  • Irish wanted to keep Tuisue, but they couldn’t compete with the money on offer
  • Gloucester currently sit fourth in the Premiership with seven wins from 12 games

Gloucester have confirmed the signing of Albert Tuisue from Premiership rivals London Irish with the Fijian No 8 admitting the offer to join the Kingsholm outfit was too good to turn down.

Tuisue will join Gloucester for the start of the 2022-23 season. The Premiership’s salary cap will be reduced from £6.4million to £5m for that campaign and the marquee player system is also being halved meaning each club can pay only one player outside the cap instead of two.

As a result, all Premiership teams are balancing their books. Irish wanted to keep Tuisue in the capital, but they couldn’t compete with the money on offer at Kingsholm.

‘It was a very hard decision to leave London Irish, but the offer on the table was too good to turn down,’ said Tuisue.

‘Everyone at the club has been so welcoming since I arrived and I have enjoyed my time here. We still have half a season to play and I am committed to giving it everything I have in the Irish jersey.’

Gloucester’s improvement has been noticeable this season and the Cherry and Whites have been given another boost by the confirmation of Tuisue’s imminent arrival.

George Skivington’s side sit fourth in the Gallagher Premiership with seven wins from 12 games and their forward power has been their biggest threat in the campaign to date.

The giant Tuisue will certainly add to Gloucester’s strength in that area. He has made 61 appearances and scored 20 tries for Irish since joining in 2019.

‘We are hugely excited Albert has opted to join us at Kingsholm,’ said Gloucester head coach Skivington.

‘He’s renowned for his physical presence on the field and explosive ball carrying, but ultimately he’s a player that gives everything for the cause which is the exactly the kind of character we want representing this club.

‘I know he will be determined to finish off his season in style and we look forward to welcoming him on our journey in the summer.’
