Give hydrangea flowers a ‘natural boost’ by feeding them a ‘enhancing’ homemade fertiliser

Hydrangeas are a beautiful addition to any garden as they are known for their big colourful blooms, and the key to getting healthier flowers is feeding them the right fertiliser.

The best time to feed hydrangeas is typically in spring before they begin producing flowers for the summer and one of the most important nutrients that encourages flower growth is potassium.

Wendy, a gardening expert from WMDesignHouse has shared her homemade banana flower fertiliser recipe which she promises will “give your flowers a boost of nutrients without breaking the bank.”

She said: “Banana peels provide a natural boost of much-needed potassium. Potassium is crucial for overall plant health, helping regulate water uptake, promoting strong root development, and enhancing flower and fruit production.

“Because banana peels decompose relatively slowly, they are an excellent source of long-term plant nutrition.”

Fill the jar with water until the peels are fully submerged, then place the lid on the jar and allow it to sit for three to seven days. You can store your homemade banana fertiliser in the fridge for up to two weeks.

When you are watering your hydrangeas, add one part of the banana fertiliser and five parts of water to a watering can and then water your plants with the diluted fertiliser.

Bury any banana peel pieces around the base of the flower where they will slowly break down to provide a steady source of potassium for your hydrangeas.

This easy-to-prepare fertiliser is a great way to cut down on food waste as well as being an incredibly simple way to encourage hydrangeas to produce bigger flowers once summer arrives.

Wendy said: “You can also use banana peel tea on other types of plants, but it is especially beneficial for flowering plants.”
