‘Get as many out now!’ Monty Don shares tip to control weeds in autumn

Monty Don often shares gardening tips and tricks with his followers on social media. Recently, he appeared in a Gardeners’ World video to recommend to viewers which gardening tasks they should do in their spare time this autumn.

On its website, the RHS advised: “Pull up annual weeds by hand before they set seed.

“Perennial weeds should be dug out with as much root (or bulb) as possible, using a hand or border fork.

“Hand weeding is easiest on lighter soils and should only be attempted where it will not disturb the roots of garden plants.

“Further pulling may be necessary with persistent weeds such as bindweed or couch grass where small root sections left behind can re-grow into new plants.”

You can also kill weed seedlings by running a hoe over a bed or between rows.

The RHS recommended doing this on a dry day with light wind, so that the seedlings will dry out on the surface of the bed rather than re-rooting into moist soil.

Other gardening tasks you can do now, according to Monty, is plant autumn onions.

He said: “Autumn onion sets fill the gap in early spring long before the spring-planted ones are ready for harvest.

“If you haven’t got room in the garden, or like me your soil is very wet and heavy, it’s a good idea to put them into plugs in order to develop roots and shoots.

“And then, when you’re ready and you’ve got space, plant them out into the soil.”

Gardening enthusiasts were quick to comment on Gardeners’ World’s post, and one person even shared a handy tip.

Twitter user Christine wrote: “When weeding it can help to have two buckets, one for those that compost and another for the perennial thugs such as marestail, bindweed and couch grass, which are better dried out then composted or burned.”
