Daily cases doubled to about 40,000 this week, prompting widespread concern.
There have been 95,640 Covid-related deaths, which equates to a fatality rate of 2.06 percent.

Despite the vaccination efforts, health authorities in France confirmed almost 5,000 patients were in intensive care with COVID-19 on Monday, which is higher than the peak seen during the second lockdown in mid-November.
Of those in intensive care, 44 percent of people with Covid were aged under 65.
