The former managing director at Bayer Leverkusen wants to introduce a play-off for the Bundesliga title as he fears fans may become bored of Bayern Munich’s dominance.

Bayern have dominated the German top-flight for almost a decade – picking up the Bundesliga title for the past nine years.

Therefore, Wolfgang Holzhauser – who stepped down from his role at Bayer Leverkusen eight years ago – believes a change in the league’s ‘format would be an absolute highlight for the fans’.

The 2021-2022 campaign has only just began and many believe Julian Nagelsmann’s team will lift the trophy.

Bayern have won four of their opening five game of the season – having beaten Bochum 7-0 last weekend.

As a result, Holzhauser believes the league need to change things by introducing a title play-offs.

He said of his idea in an interview via Spox: ‘I would rather call it a knockout round. The first four teams in the table would play a semi-final against each other after the regular Bundesliga season.

‘The first plays against the fourth and the second against the third. The respective winners then contest a final, while the losers play out third or fourth place.

‘Against the backdrop of the Champions League places, such a format would be an absolute highlight for the fans.’
