Kirsty Probert, 22, was rushed to hospital after being involved in a smash on August 29 on the A465 near Hereford. The mum of one broke her neck and underwent surgery to have two discs removed from the front of the neck and a plate inserted in her body.

But doctors at Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Selly Oak, Birmingham, have said Kirsty will never be able to walk again.

Speaking to Wales Online, her devastated mum Carol said: “She is paralysed from the chest down and has no movement in her right arm or in either of her hands.

“She has now got a tracheotomy fitted to help her breathing.”

“She is absolutely devastated, particularly because she has a little girl.”

The family, from Abergavenny, south Wales, have set up a fundraising page in an attempt to raise as much money as possible to help her daughter to recover as well as she can.

Carol added: “We cannot come to terms with what has happened to our daughter and we have been left devastated for her.

“Due to the Covid restrictions in place we can only see her for one hour a week. We have only just seen her on Saturday for a third time since the day of the collision. It’s heartbreaking.”

The accident happened in the early hours of the morning on the rural road. Kirsty had been travelling as a passenger in the vehicle with her friend on a trip back to Abergavenny from Hereford.

Carol thanked her community in Abergavenny and further afield for their support so far, adding that it is “very much appreciated at such a tragic time in our lives”.

West Mercia Police were contacted but a spokesman declined to comment.
