A WELL-loved bike shop that served generations of cyclists for decades has closed its doors for good.

The Bike Shop, in Derby, had been a fixture of the local community since the 1980s.

Known for expert advice, friendly service, and a stock of more than 400 bikes, the closure marks the end of an era for local riders.

The shock news was confirmed by a short, 10-word message posted on the store’s Facebook page: “Sad to say but we are now close for good.”

No prior announcement was made, and the shop closed without warning, leaving loyal customers stunned and saddened.

It’s been an incredible journey and we’re grateful to all our customers over the years.

“Closing wasn’t an easy decision, but the time felt right. Thank you, Derby”

Tributes poured in online from heartbroken customers.

Susanne Wilkins wrote: “”You’ve always been amazing and really helpful. Nothing too big a job.”

Will Maynard, who did work experience at the shop as a teen, added: “Had a great week, felt really welcome. Thank you for the opportunity.”

Derbyshire Scouts Bike Team member Paul Gant commented: “Very sad to hear.

“You’ve supported us for 20 years-over 100 bikes and countless repairs. Best wishes.”

The building itself, 100-102 Monk Street, was quietly sold in February through SDL Property Auctions.

It had been listed with a guide price of £190,000.

An SDL Property Auctions spokesperson confirmed the sale and said:

“The ground floor accommodation provides a combination of open plan retail accommodation with a staircase providing access to the upper floor retail accommodation.

“There is also a good-sized storeroom to the rear of the property.

“The first floor comprises further open plan retail accommodation along with a small office situated to the rear of this level.

“A staircase leads to the rear of the premises and provides access to the second-floor accommodation which comprises useful retail/storage accommodation.”

UK high streets have been struggling for years, largely due to the growth of online shopping.

Rising inflation in recent years has also had a significant impact, reducing consumers’ spending power.

A recent report from PwC highlighted the ongoing shift away from high streets in 2024, with more retailers opting for locations outside town and city centres.

These areas are experiencing fewer closures and more openings, with retail parks becoming an increasingly popular choice.

This shift is driven by the convenience they offer to shoppers.

According to the Centre for Retail Research, over 13,000 high street stores closed in 2024, and the trend is expected to continue in 2025.

The centre’s data revealed that 13,479 stores, or roughly 37 each day, shut down over the past year.

Around 11,340 of these closures were independent shops, marking a 45.5% increase compared to 2023.

The centre projects that approximately 17,350 stores will close in 2025, linking the rise in closures to increased employer National Insurance contributions (NICs) and the national minimum wage hike.
