Falcon and Winter Soldier theories: Major Hydra villain on the way after Madripoor debut

The criminal haven known as Madripoor had its MCU debut in last week’s episode of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. As the latest series for Disney+ continues to expand the vast comic book universe, some fans think the island city could be home to a number of new threats for the Avengers and a potential connection to the X-Men.

Marvel’s fictional location Madripoor could be the key for introducing a number of new characters to the expansive superhero franchise.

Sam Wilson (played by Anthony Mackie) and Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan) visited the island city in the latest episode of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.

However, it’s only recently that the criminal sanctuary became available for Disney, as it previously fell under 20th Century Fox’s X-Men umbrella.

Now the studio giant has control over the full roster of Marvel heroes and locations, Madripoor is bound to show up again in future feature films and Disney+ series.

Producer Kevin Feige confirmed to Entertainment Weekly: “There’s a setting in particular that people have already glimpsed in some of the trailers.

“[It’s] a setting from the Marvel Comics that was not previously available to us, but it’s more of an Easter egg in and of itself.”

In the original Marvel comic books, Madripoor has been linked to a number of characters associated with the X-Men, primarily Wolverine.

Upon the release of episode three, ‘Power Broker’, plenty of fans have already pointed out the Southeast Asian island’s association with Professor X’s team of mutants.

The comic book version of Madame Hydra briefly became the dictator of Madripoor and, like Wolverine, is closely connected to the fictional island.

A modified version of the character was previously portrayed by Russian actress Svetlana Khodchenkova in 2013’s The Wolverine.

Some viewers now believe the poisonous Marvel foe, now known as Viper, could resurrect Hydra once again at some point in the ongoing MCU series.

Another fan added: “They seem to really want to treat HYDRA as a thing of the past, so more than likely you’ll see the character show up with her other name, Viper.”

With Baron Zemo (Daniel Brühl) and the Flag Smashers still at large, it’s unlikely the new Marvel series will introduce a third antagonist in the remaining episodes of the series.

Still, with even more miniseries and feature films in the franchise arriving this year alone, there will be plenty of opportunities to introduce more supervillains down the line.

Now Disney has officially taken control of the X-Men and all their associated characters, the doors are wide open for Marvel’s vast pool of comic book foes to join the action.

The Falcon and the Winter Soldier continues Fridays on Disney+.
