The dining room is one of the most important spaces in any home as this is where people often relax, spend time with family, and usually tend to enjoy the company of guests. After a year of staying at home and spending more time in the dining room than ever before, it may be worth freshening up the space and giving it a style boost.

Andrew Vick, Head of Buying and Merchandising at furniture shop Dwell, said: “There are many factors to consider to ensure that the dining room remains as stylish as it is functional.

“It’s important to think about are who will be using the room on a day-to-day basis and what they’ll be using it for, as this will determine the size and type of dining table and any additional storage pieces you will want.”

Andrew recommended investing in a “sizeable table with enough chairs” if your dining room is large enough.

He added: “If your dining room is more compact in size, then why not opt for an extending table that will take you from four to six, or six to eight seats with the swivel or slide of a table-top?

“Additional chairs can be positioned on the side of the room, maybe on either end of a freestanding sideboard or pantry unit that will store away all your dining essentials and glassware.”

Andrew also gave his expert advice on which materials to opt for when buying new furniture.

He said: “When thinking of finishes, glass, wood and marble continue to prove popular for dining furniture and offer a light-reflective quality, whilst leather and velvets in bold colours on dining chairs can make a statement and inject life into the room.”

Emma Deterding, Creative Director at Kelling Designs, agreed that a table is essential for any dining room, and that opting for an extendable version if space is sparse is a good idea.

She said: “If space is at a premium, then it may be better to go for an extending design with a bench seat and additional folding chairs that can be stored away when not needed.”

Robert Walsh, Founder and Owner at Ted Todd Floors, shared his advice on buying the perfect floor for your dining room.

“When choosing wood flooring for the dining area, it’s important to pick a tone and design that you love, but you need to make sure that you pick the right type of flooring as it’s an area which has high footfall,” the interiors expert explained.

He added: “Similarly, picking the right surface finish is crucial as wooden flooring truly is an investment and is something that will last a lifetime if cared for properly.

“Satin and matt lacquers are great options as they are really hard-wearing, but oil finished floors are easier to repair if they get scratched and can be easily fixed even with the right floor care cleaner, whereas a satin or matt surface may need resealing.”

If you have an oddly shaped or smaller dining room, Robert recommended flooring with continuous patterns such as a basket weave or a Versailles pattern, as these “disguise any angles”.

“A chevron works great in a long room as it draws the eye, whereas planks work particularly well in square or rectangular rooms,” Robert said.

“With plank floors, a wider plank will work to balance a large space as there are less planks and less joins, whilst narrow planks can make a smaller room feel much wider.”
