Evercade continues to impress with underrated retro gaming release

It’s fair to say that 2024 has been a great year for retro gaming fans. Evercade, in particular, has made a ton of fantastic announcements, from new handheld and home console devices, to miniature arcade machines that are compatible with more than 500 games. That’s on top of a steady stream of new compilations, including Tomb Raider and another Bitmap Brothers collection. With lots of retro gaming goodness still to come, the company has just made another big announcement that’s sure to go down well with fans of classic games. Releasing this September, Evercade has just unveiled the Legacy of Kain Cartridge Collection.

The upcoming Evercade release features PSOne game Legacy of Kain: Blood Omen, as well as sequel Legacy of Kain Soul Reaver.

While lots of people have fond memories of Legacy of Kain Soul Reaver, Blood Omen is one of those underrated gems that not many people talk about.

Featuring a top-down perspective, the original Legacy of Kain sees players adapt to life as a vampire, feeding on the blood of humans and animals to keep his health up.

One of the first games I played after purchasing a PSOne, I remember just how atmospheric it was, especially compared to some of the games I’d played during the Mega Drive era.

Released in 1999, the sequel is a third-person action game in which players journey through two planes of existence.

Switching between the material plane and the Astral plane is essential for solving puzzles and overcoming various obstacles.

Soul Reaver spawned three PS2 era sequels, which may be beyond the capabilities of the current Evercade devices.

Fans can pre-order the Legacy of Kain Cartridge Collection from August 30. It will be compatible with all Evercade devices, including the recently announced Evercade Alpha arcade machines.

Launching in two different varieties, the upcoming Evercade Alpha arcade machines contain six different Capcom games each.

A must-have for fighting game fans, the Evercade Alpha Street Fighter Arcade features Street Fighter II Champion Edition, Super Street Fighter II Turbo, Street Fighter Alpha: Warriors’ Dreams, Street Fighter Alpha 2, Street Fighter Alpha 3 and the superb Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo.

The Evercade Alpha Mega Man Edition contains more of a mixture of games, such as Mega Man: The Power Battle, Mega Man 2: The Power Fighters, Final Fight, Knights of the Round, Carrier Air Wing and Strider.

The cabinet itself features two USB ports for external controllers, which means you can play against friends.

It’s also said to contain a high-resolution 8-inch IPS screen with a 4:3 aspect ratio that “perfectly supports the included arcade games”.
