EV which will ‘get drivers out of their petrol' models wins Car of the Year 2024

A fully electric SUV that could encourage motorists to ditch their petrol and diesel models has secured top honours at the UK Car of the Year awards.

The seven-seater Kia EV9 electric crossover was selected by almost half of the 30-strong panel, just pipping Hyundai’s Ioniq 6 which finished as runner-up.

The Kia was praised for its comfort and technology while experts also hinted at its impressive range.

John Challen, co-chairman of UK Car of the Year Awards, claims the model could encourage many to give up on combustion models forever.

He said: “The uberpractical Kia EV9 could be the vehicle that gets more drivers out of their petrol or diesel car than any other model. Seven seats, loaded with technology, premium quality and enough miles from the battery to cure almost every case of range anxiety – plus it’s fantastic to drive, too.

“The fact that nearly half of our judging panel chose the Kia as the UK Car of the Year 2024 is a massive vote of confidence in what is a seriously impressive and hugely appealing car.”

It means a fully electric model has won the main prize at the UK The Car of the Year Awards for the third successive show.

Kia has dubbed their new EV9 as a “generation-defining car” and is the newest in the South Korean firm’s collection.

The stunning bodywork is matched with an impressive and sleek interior put together using upcycled or plant-based materials.

Advanced safety features such as highway assistance, parking tools and anti-collision are also equipped. The Kia EV9 will be capable of up to 349 miles on a full charge, according to WLTP estimates.

However, ultra-fast charging can inject 154 miles into the battery in just 15 minutes making it ideal for those looking for convenience.

The model can reach an impressive 124mph and can reach 0-62mph in around 5.3 seconds.

Paul Philpott, president and CEO of Kia UK ,admitted securing recognition from the industry was a “significant” prize.

He explained: “It is a huge honour for Kia UK to be awarded a category win as well as the title of UK Car of the Year 2024 at this year’s UK Car of the Year Awards.

“We’re delighted that the judges agree just how impressive the EV9 is. The recognition is made all the more significant, having been judged by some of the UK’s most influential and respected journalists from across automotive, business and technology industries.

“We are grateful to the judges for their hard work appraising this year’s contenders.

“This well-respected award also gives our 190-strong UK dealer network a boost, as it continues to support customers on their electrification journey and deliver them the UK’s best car.”
