'Europe is so far behind us- many will die'- Britons must have faith in UK vaccine plan

Dep Chair of the JCVI Prof Anthony Harnden insisted that Europe is still struggling to deal with the coronavirus crisis. While speaking on Good Morning Britain, Professor Harnden insisted Europe’s start at stop response to the AstraZeneca vaccine rollout has resulted in the continent being further behind Britain. He warned that this could result in more deaths to coronavirus and insisted Britons needed to have faith in the vaccine programme.

Professor Harnden added that the AstraZeneca vaccine was safe and developing blood clots was a very rare side effect and occurred in less than one in million people.

Professor Harnden said: “Every country needs to do what they think is good for their population based on the number of infection rates they have in their country and what safety signals they are seeing.

“I will say that Europe is so far behind what we are doing in this country, that many more people will die in Europe because of their start-stop vaccination strategy.

“This is compared to this country where we have been solid and rolled it out quickly.

“We have responded to safety signals, we have chosen the right age groups and made bold decisions about first and second doses.

“Everything we have decided so far has come good, so I think the public need to be with us on this.”
