‘Think before you tweet’: Fans blast the Europa League’s official account for posting cheery ‘Happy Thursday everyone!’ message after Russia declared war on Ukraine

  • Russia have sent shockwaves through Europe by invading Ukraine on Thursday
  • Hundreds of Ukrainian troops are already said to have been killed in the conflict
  • But the Europa League still took to Twitter to wish people a ‘happy Thursday’
  • Fans quickly slammed them for the cheery message in the wake of the invasion

The Europa League has been slammed by fans on Twitter for posting a cheery ‘happy Thursday’ message in the wake of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Russia has launched an all-out war on Ukraine after president Vladimir Putin gave the order for his country to attack, with missiles and bombs raining down from the sky and killing hundreds of troops already.

It is a worrying moment for both Ukraine and the rest of Europe, who now risk being dragged into the bloodiest conflict in the continent since the Second World War.

Despite the troubling scenes in Eastern Europe, the Europa League’s official Twitter account still took to the social-media platform to wish people a happy Thursday ahead of knock-out fixtures later in the evening.

And fans have hit out at the competition for their light-hearted message on such a distressing day.

One replied: ‘You can not be serious!’

Another commented: ‘Jeez! Today, of all days, everyone who’s in charge of official social media accounts with a big audience should THINK before they TWEET.’

A third told the Europa League’s account: ‘Delete this tweet. Don’t be ridiculous.’

Another wrote: ‘This is just about the worst social media post I have ever seen.’

While one simply asked: ‘Really!?’

The Europa League quickly deleted their post after receiving widespread criticism from fans online.

After Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky approved a decree of martial law in the country, the country’s Premier League has been put on hold for a minimum of 30 days.

The Ukrainian top flight was due to get back up and running again this weekend after their winter break, but will now do so by March 26.
