Erik ten Hag admits Man Utd fears but 'doesn't care' about Sir Jim Ratcliffe's view

Ratcliffe, who took over the football operations at United earlier this year, has been vocal about his plan to take United ‘back to the top of world football’. To do that, the Red Devils will have to be in the Champions League next season – something that looks unlikely right now.

Despite their troublesome position outside of the Champions League spots, Ten Hag insists he’s unphased by the opinion of Ratcliffe, with the ex-Ajax man focused on fixing the ‘problems’ within the United camp. When asked if Ratcliffe would see missing out on the top four as a failure, Ten Hag replied: “I don’t know and, actually, I also don’t care.

“I have high standards and I would be disappointed if we didn’t qualify. I know it will be very difficult, because we’re not in a good position. But we want to win every game – that is the standard we have here among each other. We will keep going and keep believing in those standards.”

He added: “That will be the approach in every game. We will keep fighting until the end. We have to catch up, but I know we’ve had a lot of problems, so I’m a realistic man, also.”

Ten Hag was quick to point out United have operated with a depleted squad for the most part this season, with the 20-time English champions dealt another injury blow this week. Centre-back duo Lisandro Martinez and Victor Lindelof are expected to be missing for at least a month, essentially ruling them out for the majority of United’s run-in.

When quizzed on how injuries have impacted United’s season, Ten Hag said: “In a competition that is so competitive and the teams are so close in terms of levels with each other, then you need the players to be available – that is a fact.

“If you have to make compromises, your levels will drop and you will drop points. If you play a consistent team, your levels will go up. When you bring the best players into your squad, you will collect more points and that’s a fact, so I’m realistic.

“Nevertheless, I will keep fighting in every game and I will demand we win every game, because we’re Manchester United and we have to win every game.”
