Energy bills: Homeowners could face £326 bill increase from end of March – tariffs at risk

0

Between now and March 31, as many as 98 fixed term tariffs are due to expire. As many as 71 will see bills rise if customers don’t switch before the March 31 cut off. Fixed-term tariffs tend to be the cheapest option for homeowners who are looking to protect themselves from energy price increases.

But customers on E.ON’s “Fix 1 Year Exclusive March 2020” will see their annual gas and electricity costs leap from £812.34 to £1,138.18 – a whopping £325.84 (40.11 percent) surge.

Laura Howard, personal finance expert at Forbes Advisor UK, said: “Many UK households could be just days away from paying hundreds of pounds more for their gas and electricity due to a slew of fixed-term deals coming to an end.

“This is bad enough by itself, but it’s made even worse by Ofgem’s price cap increase on April 1 that allows energy suppliers to hike costs to their highest levels for some time.

“It’s important to remember that while a lot of fixed tariffs allow penalty-free switching at any time during the contract, some will impose exit penalties.

“But under Ofgem switching rules, people on a fixed term tariff can switch penalty-free 49 days before their deal is due to expire, so everyone on tariffs that are due to expire this month, and in April, can – and should – switch to a better energy deal right now.

“Switching energy is simple, and by using a comparison website it only takes a matter of minutes to find and move to better deals.

“You could save as much as £497 by switching, so there’s no reason not to shop around.”
