Priya Sharma (played by Fiona Wade) was part of Emmerdale’s big Christmas storyline last year when her fiancé, Al Chapman (Michael Wildman) was exposed for lying and cheating with Debbie Dingle (Charley Webb). When Express.co.uk spoke to the actress, Fiona discussed her character’s relationships with the Sharma family members and alluded to the mother of one always having to prove herself and her capabilities when it comes to business. But why is Jai Sharma (Chris Bisson) and Rishi Sharma (Bhasker Patel) so hard on Priya? Perhaps it has something to do with the past…
Priya arrived in the Emmerdale back in 2009 and was quickly given a job at brother Jai and Nikhil Sharma’s (Rik Makarem) factory.
But when she was given the title of acting supervisor, and her friendships suffered because of it, she handed in her notice and left.
It wasn’t until a year later when she returned with her parents Georgia (Trudie Goodwin) and Rishi that she announced she was staying for good.
Ever since then, Priya has had a string of failed relationships and jobs, and it has been her brothers – Jai especially – who have picked up the pieces.

Now it seems she wants to prove to her family was a strong and capable woman she is and how she doesn’t need mollycoddling before.
But, if a secret from the past rears its ugly head, Priya could have no choice but to do what her family tells her.
Speaking to Express.co.uk about her character, Fiona said: “Priya hadn’t been with someone for a good couple of years for years.
“She’s a strong woman. And I think despite everything, she’s brave, and when she wants something, she just goes for it. She’s quite focused and tunnel vision.
“But I want to kind of break away from everyone telling her what to do. Be her independent woman with our own thoughts, our own mind, our own decisions, sometimes puts her slightly in the wrong place,” Fiona continued.
As for how her family helps her in times of needs, she added: “Whether it be with work or men, they’re always there, in the background, they’re strong family, they’re close family – they live together.
“I think she just feels she wants to prove to them that she can run a business on her own. Have a great relationship, be a great mom, all those things,” Fiona commented.
Why is Priya so determined to prove her worth to her family? Perhaps it has something to do with a past mistake she made?
Little is know about Priya’s mother, she was last seen in April 2015 when she went on a cruise and never returned.
Clearly, Rishi and Georgia divorced as the former has gone on to remarry.
Could Priya be harbouring a secret that means she is bound to whatever her brothers and father tell her to do?
Emmerdale airs weekdays at 7pm on ITV.
