Britain’s newest tennis sensation Emma Raducanu has joked that she was ‘ghosted’ by her parents after sealing her spot in the quarter-finals of the US Open.

Raducanu, 18, defeated Shelby Rogers in straight sets to reach the final eight in only her second ever Grand Slam appearance and dazzle once again.

But in her post-match press conference, the teenager revealed that her parents were yet to get in touch, although she was inundated with messages from friends.

‘Yeah, I’ve got quite a lot of messages from my school friends,’ Raducanu said.

‘It’s really nice that we’re still in contact even though we’ve left. I mean, it was quite a short time ago.

‘My parents actually like ghosted me after the match.

‘I texted them, but they didn’t reply even though they were online! Yeah, that meant something.

‘But yeah, it’s just been such a supportive reaction and atmosphere after Wimbledon and here.

‘I mean, I’m just feeling like really, really happy. I think that’s really showing in my game on court.’

Raducanu’s triumph was made even more impressive after she dropped just three games against the home favourite, who had earlier knocked out Ashleigh Barty.

She first began making waves in the spot after her sensational run at Wimbledon, her Grand Slam debut, earlier this summer.

However, she faces a difficult task next in Belinda Bencic, the Olympic champion, but Raducanu is confident she will be able to assert herself in the tie.

‘[Bencic] has a lot of experience on the tour,’ she added. ‘She’s in great form, having won Olympic gold.

‘I’m also feeling good about my game, also confident with the amount of matches I’ve played. I feel like I’m building with each one.

‘It will be an extremely difficult match. I know if I’m going to have a chance, I’m going to have to play some really good tennis.’

Tim Henman hailed Raducanu after she responded in perfect fashion to her shaky start against Rogers.

Henman, the former British No 1, praise her ‘incredible’ reaction to her early setbacks, which saw her broken immediately before she lost the first two games.

‘It was so special, to see Emma Raducanu get off to that nervous start, you felt for her, but she showed courage to dig her heels in and fight her way out of that. I did not expect her to react like that, it was incredible,’ he said on Amazon Prime.

‘Even up 6-2, 5-1 it is not easy to finish it off. I was so impressed how she kept her composure and finished it off. She had very good support even playing an American, it will be interesting in the next match to see whether she has a majority of support.

‘I was pretty nervous for her (at 2-0 down), you hope she can stay in the moment. When you are young it’s very easy to get ahead of yourself, but she handled herself so well. She also spoke so well afterwards, let us enjoy her journey.

‘We have to go one at a time, she is inexperienced, it’s no good thinking about the semis and final, she plays the Olympic champion now.

‘Rogers did not pose threats, but (quarter-final opponent Belinda) Bencic is different class and the clear favourite.’
