Emergency services rushed to Shirehampton Primary School in Bristol this morning to reports of a man trapped. He was freed from the machinery and taken to hospital, where his condition remains “serious”.

All children are safe and in class, Bristol Live reports.

Firefighters had to use hydraulic equipment to rescue the stricken contractor.

It is unclear how the incident occurred, or what machinery the man became trapped in.

It is said the man was part of a team completing building work at the school, which is in the west of Bristol and near the River Avon.

A spokesman from Avon Fire and Rescue Service said: “Crews from Avonmouth and Southmead were called at 10:49am to St Mary’s Walk, Shirehampton.

“On arrival they found one casualty trapped in machinery.

“Firefighters used hydraulic equipment to rescue the casualty from the machinery. The casualty was left in the hands of the ambulance service.”

The patient was taken to hospital in a road ambulance, although an air ambulance was also called.

A spokesman for South West Ambulance Service said: “I can confirm that we were called to an incident at this location at 10:43, with reports of a person being trapped in vehicle machinery.

“We allocated multiple resources including our Hazardous Area Response Team and an air ambulance.

“The incident is ongoing and we are treating a middle-aged male patient with serious injuries.”

No one else was hurt.

“We’re assisting the fire and ambulance service at the scene of an incident in the grounds of Shirehampton Primary School in which a man has been injured whilst operating machinery,” a spokesman for Avon and Somerset Police said.

“The incident was reported at 10.52am today (Friday 17 September).

“The man, who was working as a contractor, has been taken to hospital and enquiries are ongoing at the scene in conjunction with the Health and Safety Executive.”
