The horror crash took place north of the Egyptian city of Sohag on Friday.
State television reported that 32 people have been killed and 66 have been injured in the collision.
Pictures and videos show train carriages derailed above a body of water.
A security source said: “The trains collided while going at not very high speeds, which led to the destruction of two carriages and a third to overturn.”
Egypt’s health ministry said 36 ambulances are attending the scene.
People with injuries are being taken to local hospitals.
A source told Cairo 24 news website: “The number of injuries has exceeded dozens so far, and they have been transferred to Maragha Hospital, Tahta Hospital and Sohag Hospital.”
Egypt has one of the oldest and largest rail networks in the region and accidents are common.
