Just days after Home Secretary Priti Patel promised to crack down on such action, Insulate Britain ignored the threat of jail-time to bring fresh misery to commuters.

Some 52 activists blocked the arterial route around London at Junction 14 – the exit for Heathrow Airport’s Terminal 5. With wind and rain making it even more hazardous, all were detained as tailbacks built up in both directions after 8am.

Incensed motorists branded the protest “ridiculous”, with some even getting out of their gridlocked cars to argue with demonstrators.

One woman said: “I’ve got to feed my kids, I need my money to feed my kids, but you don’t get that. If you did, you wouldn’t be blocking people trying to get to work.”

Dr Diana Warner, 62, a retired GP from Bristol, was among the activists calling for the Government to insulate homes to help cut carbon emissions. She said: “I’m here because of desperation, it’s not an easy thing to do.”
