“I don’t know whether Max feels like this is probably the end of the road in terms of failed relationships going forward it’s not, he hasn’t got a good success rate.”

Discussing his final days on the soap, he said: “My last scene as Max was with Steve McFadden, which I was really pleased about, Steve has been a mate of mine for years and years and years.

“I’ve known Steve since I was about 15 years old. I did a film with him when I was [around] 16-years-old maybe.”

“So I was really pleased personally that my last thing was with Steve,” Jake continued.

“I’ve always been a great admirer of his work, his work ethic and the way that he approaches what he does. On a personal level, I was really pleased with that.

“Obviously with Covid, there were no parties. Nothing like that so I just walked away, said goodbye to the person at the front gate.

“So that was one a bit weird after 15 years but I’ve known since the summer that I was going so I had good chances over that time to have good conversations with everyone so they all know how I feel about them.”

EastEnders continues on BBC One on Monday at 8.05pm.
